Pueblo Alto
I continued to climb up onto the mesa to the high point where the Pueblo Alto complex is located. Pueblo Alto was located on the roads providing the northern entrance into Chaco Canyon, at an altitude of 6,440 feet, 350 feet above the canyon floor. Located on a high spot, Pueblo Alto provides distant views in all directions across the empty desert to distant mountains. The high outlying locations like Pueblo Alto and Penasco Blanco may have provided line-of-sight signaling locations to far away Huerfano Mountain and Chimney Rock beyond. Pueblo Alto was another D-shape structure with a plaza and kivas. Excavations of the large garbage middens suggest that it was used for ceremonies that included feasting and the ritual breaking of ceramic pots. On the descent portion of the loop hike, I could see carved steps climbing down the side of the canyon.
