West Thumb Geyser Basin

West Thumb Geyser Basin

We stopped to walk around the West Thumb Geyser Basin with its many thermal features and beautiful views across enormous Yellowstone Lake. This provided a gorgeous winter landscape covered with sulfuric steam. I was deeply impressed by the views across the frozen lake to the shining Absaroka Mountains on the other side. The late afternoon light at the lake was wonderful. From there, we drove through the lodgepole forests to the Snow Lodge at Old Faithful. After dinner, I walked in the dark out to watch Old Faithful erupt. I could just see a massive white form of steam and water reaching towards the milky way above.
