The National Elk Refuge

On the way from Jackson, on an incredibly bright and clear morning, we stopped at the National Elk Refuge where they were providing supplemental winter feed to the elk. We rode out to the elk herd in a sleigh wagon pulled by two large Belgian horses. Our driver explained that they worked to maintain the elk herd in order to maintain the ecosystem and especially to support the predators, wolves and mountain lions. Because of the feeding, we saw thousands of elk. We also saw two bald eagles who feed on fish and ducks in the creek and on the carcasses of dead elk. Shortly, after leaving the refuge, we stopped for an outstanding view of the Tetons.
