The Highline Trail

The Highline Trail

After spending the night at Saint Mary’s, we drove to the highpoint on the Going to the Sun Road at Logan Pass for a twelve mile hike starting on the Highline Trail.  This trail follows and hangs on the side of the sheer Garden Wall with continuously changing views of peaks across the creek valleys.  Reaching a high point on the trail, we saw a very large Hoary Marmot, although because of its size, we did not know what it was. Later in the hike we started seeing the Granite Chalet on a high knoll, which is a lodge that can only be reached by foot trails.  When we got to the stone chalet at lunchtime, we found we could buy soft drinks and snacks at the chalet.  It was crowded with hikers.  From the Chalet, we had a very warm hike through an old burn area back down to the road and a shuttle back to Logan Pass.  Before we got to the road, we stopped at a lovely stream to drink cold water and soak our feet.
