Lake Josephine
On August 25, we moved our camp to the Many Glacier area. In the afternoon, we took a very warm hike around Swift Current Lake and Lake Josephine. The views on this day were very hazy from the smoke from western fires outside the park. As we hiked, we ate thimbleberries that grew along the trail. We stopped for lunch at a boat dock on the south end of Lake Josephine. As we ate, a cow moose walked out of the forest on our left and into the lake. It spent a number of minutes eating vegetation from the bottom of the lake. By then, it had drawn quite an audience of hikers and tourists. It then began to swim out into the lake in front of us and over to the shore on our right side. We saw a great deal of bear scat and other hikers told us about sighting grizzlies, but we saw no bears.
