Swayambhunath

Later in the afternoon, we visited the Buddhist stupa of Swayambhunath, otherwise known as the monkey temple. The site is located on top of a high hill, within a large wooded park, with views over the city. It is a popular destination for families from the city on their one day off from work. The round stupa on the top is designed to represent a lotus flower with a golden tower with all-seeing eyes. The primary attraction of the site is the free ranging troop of macaque monkeys. These monkeys are much beloved and treasured by the people of Kathmandu. There are also free-ranging dogs who also seem to have a special status.
