The Golden Cathedral

The Golden Cathedral

We climbed steeply down from the Egypt trailhead, high on the canyon rim, hiking down the sandstone slope. We descended to Fence Canyon which was full of Cottonwood trees and vegetation and followed the canyon to the Escalante River. We followed the Escalante downstream and crossed the knee-deep, opaque, green river several times. We turned into Neon Canyon, with its high colorful, striped walls. At the end of Neon Canyon was the Golden Cathedral, a box canyon that ended in a steep, deep-red wall that hung over a small pool and beach. The wall had two large openings that provided skylights and allowed climbers to descend from above. The setting provided a meditative and spiritual place. I lay on my back on a large, flat boulder and looked at the striped walls and blue sky.
