Salcantay Trek
On Saturday, June 26, we started our four day trek that would end at Machu Picchu. We started in the small town of Mollepata, where the family of a store owner all participated in fixing us breakfast. We hiked out of the town and into the hills above. When we climbed onto a ridge near Cruz Plata, we saw our first snow capped peak, 19, 412 foot high Nevado Humantay. When we got close to our campsite, we first saw the high mountain of the area, the sacred Apu, Nevado Salcantay with an elevation of 20,574 feet. On this day, we climbed nearly 4,000 feet in elevation gain to our campsite at Soraypampa above 12,600 feet in elevation.
