On the River
We spent eleven days going down the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon from Lees Ferry, 187 miles to Whitmore Wash. We went down on the cruise ships of the Canyon, 35 foot rubberized rafts with quiet outboard motors. They were driven by two experienced, toughened boatmen. Each had a runner to assist. In the morning, we would find smooth water that reflected the vivid colors of the Canyon walls. The vast scale of the canyon provided vistas that were difficult to comprehend. Regularly we went down the falls, the rapids that were sometimes violent and very wet.
