Animal Life

Not long after departing from Lees Ferry, we passed under the Navajo Bridge. At the bridge, we spotted black condors with their white-fringed wings outspread, soaring above us. There were three gliding far above. One landed on a small ledge high on the canyon wall in the Kaibab Rock and after a moment the bird took off to soar again. As we navigated downstream, we chased small flocks of blue winged teal with their frantic flapping along with one great blue herring. The beautiful descending song of the Canyon Wren was a constant although we never saw the birds. On our hikes, lizards of several species were constantly underfoot and in camp the stinging red ants were plentiful. Twice from the boat, we saw desert sheep coming down to the river to drink.
