St. George
The second morning we took the public ferry to St George, an old colonial town founded in the early seventeenth century. St. George is a lovely small town at the northwestern end of Bermuda with its own harbor guarded by Fort St. Catherine. The town climbs gently up from the dock to a hilltop above the town. It has its own unique architecture with buildings constructed of heavy limestone to protect from hurricanes. The buildings are a range of pastel colors and pure white. The slanted roofs are composed of limestone to collect rainwater, since potable water is scare on the island. We walked the narrow alleys among flowers and buildings of various shape, size and color.
